Retired Vice admiral of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Freddy Numberi is one Indonesia’s former high ranking military officer and also politician. He served three times as an Indonesian Minister, which are the Minister of Sea and Fisheries, the Minister of Transportation (during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration) and Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform (during President Abdurrahman Wahid administration).
He was born in Yapen Waropen, Papua, in 15 Oktober 1947. From early on he has already showed that he is a hardworking person during. It is shown by his remarkable career in the navy and after his retired from the navy. His military career was very impressive and he was also known as a Papuan born national pride who held a high rank in the military. Freddy Numberi even held a position as a Commander in Indonesia Navy V Main Base in Papua-Maluku once.
After he retired from the navy, he became the governor of Papua Province in 1998, but in 2001, President Abdurrahman Wahid decided to assign him as the Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform. Ten months later, President Wahid decided to change his position to Indonesia Ambassador for Italy and Malta. He held this position for 3 years.
Many people think that his career would go down after he became an Ambassador, but Freddy Numberi has proven them wrong by becoming the Minister of Sea and Fisheries in 2004. During this time, Freddy was focusing on aquaculture development to reduce over fishing, to maintain fish population, to ensure food security, and to increase welfare.
“There are many countries that has proven their reliability in aquaculture. The South Italy and South France coastal communities, for example, were originally poor regions. However, their diligent and professional efforts in aquaculture have increased their welfare,” said Freddy Numberi, cited from tokohindonesia.
Freddy at the time, has succeeded in building 65 percent of aquaculture during his leadership as the Indonesian Minister of Sea and Fisheries. Therefore, when Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono got elected for the second time as the President of Indonesia in 2009, President Yudhoyono re-appointed him as one of his Minister, but this time as the Minister of Transportation.
Freddy Numberi is one of the most influential Papuan born person in Indonesia with his military and political achievements. He is celebrated by not only the Papuan people, but also the whole nation. Although as a man, he will never be perfect, but we should be thankful for his service. Even until now, Freddy Numberi is the first Papuan people who has ever been chosen as an Indonesia Minister for three times.
He is not the only Papuan who has received the honor to be an Indonesian Minister, there are also 4 other Papuan born men and woman who have achieved that position. One of them is, Yohana Embise, who was chosen as the Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection. She is the first Papuan women who becomes an Indonesian Minister.
